We’re here with Chuck Bates from Bridgeway Captial Management. A quantitative investment management firm in Houston, Texas that leverages Charles River’s application management and FIX network services. Chuck, what challenges are you facing in your firm’s operations?
Chuck: We’re constantly dealing with bigger volumes of data, more requests for data, and insuring the integrity of that data.
How long have you been a Charles River customer and why did Bridgeway originally select the Charles River IMS solution?
Chuck: We’ve been a customer a little over three years. We wanted to improve the functionality of our OMS for the traders as our volumes were going up, but we also wanted to create efficiencies for the portfolio managers, and Charles River did both.
How has Charles River IMS improved functionality for your traders and created efficiencies for your portfolio managers.
Chuck: The FIX functionality makes it incrementally easier for the traders to send out more orders to the market place, manage those orders, and get the fills back instantly. As far as the portfolio managers, it’s really streamlined the order creation process. In our previous system they may have to create separate orders depending on the type of account. Now, they can complete them all in one single group based on a style.
What are some of the current trends you are seeing the investment management industry?
Chuck: More regulation, more requests for transparency, and more requests for things like TCA (trade-cost analysis).
How does Charles River’s application management service help your firm?
Chuck: In general, Bridgeway believes in the outsourcing model. We want to keep our firm small and focused on asset management. We don’t have an internal IT team, so it was great to have experts to manage the CRD system for us. That’s what the managed services group allows.
I also understand you are considering Charles River’s hosted solution. Why are you looking at that?
Chuck: It’s just one more aspect of Charles River that we’ll no longer have to manage; the hardware, and support of the hardware, the upgrades, the database archives, things of that nature. It gives us, again, experts to do it where we don’t have to develop our own.
Thank you, Chuck, for sharing your perspectives with us today.
Chuck: Thank you, my pleasure.
